Agnès Varda once said, “If we open people up, we’d find landscapes.” Hope Gangloff, well-known for portraits that capture the essence of a generation, elevates instances overlooked in the maelstrom of a hurried life, and allows our eyes to adjust to the beauty found in nature or a quiet moment. The saturated colors and complex patterns once modeled by the denizens of Brooklyn now cloak summer campfires and studio shelves in sartorial splendor. With a sly wink to the characters that once populated her paintings, an assortment of artworks and objects fill each canvas with life and sentimental depth.

...Van Gogh wrote to Emile Bernard, “one must attack [the glorious splendors of nature] nonetheless, however incompetent one may feel before the unspeakable perfection.” Dreamscapes grown from the seeds of the artist’s personal environment, Gangloff’s dynamic scenes tempt you into a world of her own making: one of enrapturing color, sweeping lines, and familiar objects turned surreal. ... Gangloff reminds us of our collective spiritual relationship to nature, while celebrating her own artistic process and history.
