Wilmer Wilson IV is concerned with representation of the “marginalized body as shaped in and by city space.” Appropriating everyday objects that constitute “the marginal shadows of collective life’s grand narratives,” Wilson depends on found material such as brown paper bags, stickers, staples, and postage stamps as the primary medium for his works.

Wilson further expands his practice by replacing the wood panel with a columnar kiosk and the staples with clear headed push pins. The three-dimensional structures force an active engagement with the image as the photo cannot be seen in its entirety from just one angle, or point of view. The push pins, like the staples, necessitate a careful consideration and navigation of the subject, at once obscuring, distorting, and amplifying.

The clear pushpin tops enact distortions on the vaguely nuclear-family-archetypal figures populating this cylindrical composition, as the mind does when remembering. The cylindrical structure presents a continuous compositional plane that animates the subjects’ playing out a domestic drama ad infinitum.

The labor-intensive act of stapling almost 200,000 staples, or attaching hundreds of pushpins, onto these large images suggests an act of care to his practice. Wilson takes images of Black bodies subject to fetishization and hyper-vigilance and constructs a protective layer or veil over them.

The aim has always been to lessen the demand of visibility on bodies specifically, and to make use of pedestrian objects from public and domestic spheres to create barriers, viewing devices and/or mediating layers that modulate an audience's relationship to the bodies imaged or implied beyond said layers.
