BEVERLY SEMMES: Glitterati
Closing Date07 March 2020
In conjunction with the current exhibition, Beverly Semmes: Red, our FOCUS this week turns to a series within the artist’s Feminist Responsibility Project, a years-long endeavor examining censorship, pornography, and the pornography of censorship. The five works, on view in Gallery II, continue Semmes’ mission to censor a cache of pornographic publications with which she was charged over a decade ago. In addition to the painterly flourishes used to cover the naked bits, Semmes now adds a flash of glitter and bedazzlement, acknowledging the contradictory erotic charge generated by her acts as Censor. The project poetically parallels our culture’s ambiguous relationship to pornography, a topic which remains very much top of mind.
