ALLISON MILLER
SPEEDS 10 Dec 2015 - 30 Jan 2016 Regarding Allison Miller’s new paintings and drawings, it is advisable to watch for red herrings, green ghosts, blue balls, and pale pink smoke screens… when repetition clicks over and becomes pattern. When the decorative function of mark becomes structural scaffolding. When pattern pathologically finds itself in the process of falling apart or coming together. When systems take hold just to be broken. Read more -
BENJAMIN DEGEN
WHERE WE LIVE 23 Oct - 5 Dec 2015 "The connections that seemed so clear to me in pictures became cryptic in words and I am only able to understand them through the process of painting. I am hoping that I can share my thoughts informally rather than in essay form. The show title, "Where We Live," alludes to how we, both individually and collectively, inhabit the space around us. Having recently moved out of the city (to the mountains and back) I’ve been examining these ideas from a new perspective." -Benjamin Degen Read more -
WILLIAM VILLALONGO
MIND, BODY & SOUL 10 Sep - 17 Oct 2015 William Villalongo invites the viewer to return to his magical Otherworld, offering us edgy, multifaceted vignettes framed and softened by floral and velvet flocked borders. The artist layers his canvas with figures and narratives that allow for multiple paths of entry. Villalongo’s paintings are ultimately visions of modernity’s possibilities. His allusions to African masks, and Renaissance perspective, suggests a world of mythological and pedagogical continuities. Read more -
BODY | IMAGE
11 Jun - 31 Jul 2015 Bringing together the work of six intergenerational artists working across media, Body | Image examines the pre-reflective appearance of the corporeal in works of contemporary abstraction. Merleau-Ponty was the first to propose that one could not consider perception without considering the body as mediator of experience. On a conscious or subconscious level this interface is fundamental to the reception and perception of our world. The existence of the body in Art of the abstract/conceptual nature shown here, though surprising should not be unexpected. Read more -
HOPE GANGLOFF
1 May - 6 Jun 2015 Gangloff’s frontal, direct and focused paintings recall August Sanders approach to portraiture. The model becomes an archetype under her gaze. Subjects are platonic forms cast into the contemporary; think the cook, the thief, his wife and her lover. But more than bloodless ciphers, these individuals have a story to tell which Gangloff relays through expression, posture and textured nuanced detail. No clue is left to chance but plays a role in the bigger picture. Read more -
ERIC FERTMAN
TROPICAL BURNOUT 19 Mar - 25 Apr 2015 Eric Fertman continues to produce witty and edgy sculpture with big attitude. His wry approach is a means of tackling topical issues through disjuncture. In doing so Fertman suggests the remove we often experience as bystanders to global cataclysms. Modern reality is constructed largely through images and in-turn our confrontation with social and biological strife is constantly mediated. Read more -
MARCIA KURE
GREY 5 Feb - 14 Mar 2015 Inspired by her recent residency at The V&A, London, Marcia Kure continues to embrace abstraction and figuration through sculpture, watercolor and collage. Making a formal and ideological transition within the work, Kure pushes towards abstraction as a means of negotiating the hyper-realism of modern modes of communication and dissemination. In processing current events from natural to social disasters she addresses abstraction of the physical body through a variety of mediums that grapple with laws of nature and culture. Read more -
SHAUN O'DELL
BY CLOUD 11 Dec 2014 - 31 Jan 2015 O’Dell’s work has long dealt with mythology both literally and on a broad scope. His work is an allegory of painting seen through the lens of abstraction. Whether dealing with named characters or specific incidents in a personal or collective memory, these canvases are riddled with formal clues and innuendo. The patchwork palettes not only map a historical investigation of different psychological states for O’Dell, they also map a history of the studio. Read more
