GEORGE HERMS
ZEITGEIST BANDWAGON 1 Dec 2011 - 21 Jan 2012 George Herms emerged in the Sixties as a primary figure of the California assemblage movement, a movement which at its heart sought to unify art with life. In a rejection of precious or traditional art making materials and rigid compositions, Herms wove a new world order redeeming civilization’s refuse with a fresh eye and poet’s touch. This exhibition continues the mission in both two and three dimensions. Read more -
ROBYN O'NEIL
HELL 13 Oct - 23 Nov 2011 As befits the subject, “HELL” represents Robyn O’Neil’s largest and arguably most complex work to date. At 14’ long, incorporating over 35,000 collage elements and 65,000 figures, the project is both a literal and figurative odyssey. Drawn features are interspersed with cut paper to create a dense multidimensional space. In O’Neil’s “HELL”, a somber narrative unfurls, drawing the viewer into a world of robed figures and sweat-suit clad men clambering to exit their terrifying and gruesome existence. Read more -
THISORGANIZED
8 Sep - 8 Oct 2011 A hyper-energized mash-up, “THISORGANIZED” presents work which spans genre and me- dium from almost two dozen young, working artists in dialogue. It is a microcosm of a bur- geoning artistic community that is united by individuality of vision—from Chie Fueki’s vivid multi-cultural response to American popular culture, to Benjamin Degen’s heady, psychedelic throwback to Cubism, to the obsessively rendered pen-and-ink drawings of Blaze Lamper to Yuri Masnyj’s singular approach to Still Life in two and three dimensions. MARCIA KURE
DRESSED UP 17 Mar - 23 Apr 2011 “Dressed Up” was conceived while conducting research at the Smithsonian Archives as a Smithsonian Artist-Fellow in 2008. The series consists of full-length photomontage portraits of characters dressed in runway mash-ups drawn from two distinct cultural eras: the 19th Century Victorian and present day hip-hop. The Victorian era, the Age of Empire and colonization, while no longer “in fashion” remains salient in the post-colonial age through remnants of oppressive global, political, and economic structures and systems. HOPE GANGLOFF
3 Feb - 12 Mar 2011 Hope Gangloff’s is a life examined and perceptively recorded with unfailing attention to detail. Paintings of friends and colleagues capture a personal American Vision, a modern day Dick and Nicole Diver who by some turn of events have found themselves inhabiting a Brooklyn cold-water flat. Psychological portraits, each picture hints at a back story and inner life as suggested by the artist’s frenzied line and distinctive palette. Gangloff paints a picture of being in a modern world, an eloquent hard won beauty. Read more -
IN SIDE OUT
9 Dec 2010 - 29 Jan 2011 Spanning decades and generations, the works in “In Side Out” question the place of a warm and invested aesthetics within the field of abstraction. Working around the strategies of austerity, coolness, and bravado, each emphasizes the interplay of measured craftsmanship and intuitive processes: bodily energy and internal states are cut, pasted, and layered into expressive compositions that conjure unexpected depths.
