In early 2019, Gangloff was awarded an eight-week fellowship at the McDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Known for her intimate portraits, her time there sparked a newfound interest in landscape. This scene represents the view she saw from the cabin at the McDowell Colony. Maintaining her characteristic bold color palette, Gangloff renders the sky and nearby Mount Monadnock in bright orange and lavender, in contrast to the dark silhouette of the forested foreground. This distinctive palette, the sweeping, cloudy streak in the sky above, and the detailed brushwork of the ground below all combine to form a thoughtful glimpse into the artist’s spiritual relationship with her surrounding environment. In reviewing this recent body of work for New York Magazine, Jerry Saltz stated, "Painter Hope Gangloff has more than hit her supple, sensual, optical stride. Landscapes in winter nights and still-lifes are all made with brilliantly focused mark-by-mark accumulation and retinal density, tangerine color, and a love of vision itself. This is her best show to date. Gaze, hear the Earth’s tones, the hand coaxing you ever inward."
